Major incidents prompt Edinburgh Airport comms deployment

Friday, August 2, 2019

Edinburgh Airport has rolled out Everbridge’s Critical Event Management (CEM) platform to help streamline communications during emergencies at the site.

According to Everbridge, the multi-modal system allows organisations to “assess and identify events, locate key personnel and affected assets, standardise actions to reduce the time to respond/repair, and analyse response performance.” It will “replace and simplify multiple manual processes” at the airport, with the intention of speeding up communications from the emergency services to airlines, retail units and local agencies.

A spokesperson for the company said: “The main aim was to move away from the multiple processes that were previously being used to cascade information to different groups, and instead migrate to just one platform.”

Speaking of the decision to deploy the solution, Myles Grima, senior operations and resilience manager at Edinburgh Airport, said that it was prompted by a number of incidents, including a tram accident on campus, as well as a power outage. The airport was also the site of a recent counter terrorism exercise, involving 20 organisations and 400 participants.

“In order to be more effective, we needed to improve efficiency and eliminate duplication,” he said. “We are doing this with Everbridge, and can now accurately communicate with all the people who work on site in every operational area. This [is managed] through a single, integrated view to mitigate the impact of critical events.”

Phase one of the roll-out will see the airport using the technology to target emergency services as well as airlines, on-site retail outlets, and agencies involved in resilience planning, such as Edinburgh City Council. The next stage will address technology such as perimeter security and fire alarms.

Edinburgh is Scotland’s busiest airport, accommodating 14.3 million passengers every year.
